President Goodluck Jonathan has promised to attend the inauguration of his successor, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29.
President Jonathan’s clarification follows
widespread allegations that he was trying to avoid the event by proposing to handover to Buhari on May 28, a day before the actual date.
He said he will attend the event as a guest as he has no specific role to play on the inauguration day.
He noted that all over the world including America, outgoing presidents do not have any role to play on the inauguration day.
He stated that the precedence set by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007 was wrong.
Obasanjo had during the inauguration day on May 29, 2007 inspected the guard of honour and then the president-elect, Late Umaru Yar’Adua also did the same thing.
